Phil Dunlop

Born in South London to a Chinese mother and a British father, this contrast of cultures informed my view of the world. Early travels and a love of cinema led to a career in portrait and fashion photography.

A recurring theme in my work is the exploration of form and space. I use movement to create an energy which often helps me discover the best silhouette. Conversely, in my portrait photography I look for stillness, which is where I think character can be found in the moments of quiet around the conversation.

For me, the purpose of shaping light is to suggest mood. Outside of the studio, this mood must be uncovered. I’m fascinated with finding harmonious patterns of geometry and colour, an approach which informs my editorial and more reportage personal work.
